Slowly, Kioa paced the streets, trying to stifle her sniffles. She didn’t know where she was or where she was going. She hadn’t really cared, ever since her mother died. She had taken a bag of clothing and started walking, sleeping in alleyways or near houses of families that gave her food. Wandering, searching for her father.
She suddenly stopped, looking around her, not recognizing anything. Her shoulders drooped and she turned to sink to the ground against a wall. She was in an alley, but she couldn’t make out anything further down, in the dim light. Sighing, she dropped her bag to the ground beside her and curled up, wrapping her arms around her knees.
She didn’t have a coat or a sweatshirt or anything. She hadn’t thought to grab one of her mother’s after…. After she… she…. A strangled cry emerged from her throat, and Kioa buried her head in her lap. What was she doing, wandering around looking for a father she never knew? This was pointless, utterly pointless. What was she doing? It was hopeless, London was a huge city, and he might not even be in London! Utterly hopeless....

Maybe it was coincidence, or something in the air. He wasn't sure. But again, there was Chris nearing the un-chartered territory of no-man's land. His pace was slow. Cool. Calculating. That swagger in his hips that had been mostly gone emerged for a moment, a little odd skip, almost a sort of jig motion, but soon it stopped.
He was getting hungry. And he was getting lonely.
Spotting a rat, he took chase after it before it slid into a crack in a building wall, something eliciting an immature whine and cry, fists slamming against the hard brick as he stayed hunched over. His shirt felt baggy, just like the khakis he wore. Ones that almost hid all the scars. Almost. He rubbed the collar over the worse one on his throat with a whimper before he sat with his back to the wall, head in his hands. "I HATE YOU!" he screamed to no one in particular.

And her misery was interrupted by a terrifying scream. For her, at least. Kioa started at the noise, quickly hopping to her feet and backing away from where the voice had come from. Someone was there. Someone she probably didn't know, because she didn't know anyone in London.
Her breath started coming in ragged gasps, a sure sign she was about to freak out. Closing her eyes, she forced herself to calm down. It was okay. Sure, she probably didn't know who was out there, but whoever it was couldn't be bad, right? After all, everyone she had met so far in her life had been nice, so everyone was like that, right?
Once her breath had calmed down, Kioa opened her eyes and slowly crept to where the noise had come from, keeping close to the wall. Biting her lip, she peered around the corner. Huh. It was only a tom. He looked hurt, or upset, though. After a quick deliberation, she stepped out and softly asked, "Uh... hey.... are you... uh, okay?" She twined her hands behind her back, looking down at her bare feet, mostly covered by the ragged hem of her jeans. Strangers unnerved her.

This was worse then watching over the Jellicles. Baby sitting Chris. Why did she say she would do it? Oh, thats right. Because everyone in the yard ignored her. Mocked her. Or just despite her. The ignoring she could deal with, it brought silence and comfort with it. Not being noticed, overlooked, forgotten. But, being ignored when she was trying to help, that irritated the scarred queen. The fact that her endless nights of just sitting on that car hood, watching..for nothing..all unnoticed by -him- of course.
Fuck why did she even bother? Pointless. Thats why she took this other job. Chris didn't even know she was there half the time. But she agreed to keep him safe...and then said she couldn't do it. That was a lie. She could, but she knew damned well that Chris was under Macavitys claw. And Macavity was one cat she didn't want to fuck with ever again. The fact that she escaped his ring was amazing. The fact that she was on the run nearly her whole life from that point was just pathetic.
Brave warrior cat. Maybe in a former life. The air was a bit colder now, so she was wrapped in that buckskin suede jacket. Nothing worn beneath it, and her high cut roper jeans. Sure, she looked so out of place among st the rest of them. And really could have used a nice hat to finish her outfit...but that wasn't important.
Keeping Chris safe from this trashy pathetic looking queen was. Crouching down behind the closest dumpster, she just listened, waiting.
Safa the pro baby sister.
How the mighty had fallen.

Chris sniffled as he looked up at the kitten. It was strange, how in a moment of solitude he'd slightly reverted. Glimmers of the Chris who used to be so happy, well, until he went into his tantrums. Super emotional Chris. Needy Chris. Loving Chris.
"It got away," he said with a pout as he turned his head. There was something almost uncanny about their appearances, but Chris never noticed things like that.

“Oh… I’m sorry…” Three little words that could mean anything at all. “I hate losing things…” In her case, Kioa meant that she sympathized with him, losing something he thought was his. Like how she lost her mom, who was hers and hers alone. Not nearly on the same magnitude, but Kioa hated seeing anyone upset.
Shifting, she crouched and wrapped her arms around her torso. It was chilly, and she only had a ratty tanktop. After another moment of deliberation, she softly said, “I’m Kioa. Who’re you?” What was slightly familiar about him? She knew she had never met him before, but his appearance reminded her of something…

Chris gave a more pathetic sniffle before he looked at her. "Chris." His tail swished a little, hands moving near his ears as he gripped them as if hearing something bad, but after a few moments it disappeared.

Kioa blinked, her eyes darting momentarily between Chris and the ground near her feet. Mum had said... But no. He was too young! He couldn't be... Actually.... his coat did kinda look like hers.... but no. He didn't look any more than 25, and Mum said he had to be at least 33 or 34. No, it wouldn't have been this easy.
After a moment, she stood and slipped down the alley to grab her sack before returning to crouching near Chris. She pulled a threadbare blanket out of the sack and wrapped it around her shoulders. "It's getting colder, isn't it?"

"It's always cold. Makes me sick." He sniffled a few times before rubbing at his eyes. And he looked at her more curiously. "What's your name?" Again, there was the rumble of his stomach and he whined in pain.

"Kioa...." She trailed off, pulling the blanket tighter around her. "My mom was named Ariel, but she died...." Kioa bit her lip. She didn't really want to think about her mom, but it just popped out.
"Are you okay?" she asked, noticing him wince.

"Hungry," he whimpered though his ears perked up at the name. "Ariel like the Mermaid," he giggled, almost boyishly. Funny little nicknames. He had a queen friend named Ariel once, but usually he called her Mermaid, or sometimes Fishy, but she didn't really like that nickname. His head shook before he stretched and tried to sit up. "I had a queen named Ariel once. She was pretty. Prettier than that shit, Coalie." A darkness came into his eyes then, a pain, the stress. Anger.

Kioa giggled, a smile brightening up her face. "Mum said Dad used to call her Mermaid." She giggled again, a light blush coloring her cheeks. "I'm looking for my dad, actually. Mum said his name was Chris, like you." She blinked, tilting her head at him. "But you look too young." She added decisively.
After a moment, Kioa frowned at him. "Who's Coalie? Why are you mad at her?" She bit her lip, confused by the sudden change in Chris.

"Love of my life. Did this," he said, tugging down the collar to show the horrific scar. "And killed our kits. We had two. They were so young. They kept telling me that I just went for younger and younger queens and they just did that but I don't think so." His ears pricked up a little at the name. "What's your Dad look like? How old is he? Maybe I can help."

Kioa's hand flew to cover her mouth at the sight of the scar, a little sound of sympathy escaping her lips. "That... That's horrible. I'm so sorry..." How could anyone kill their own kits? It was too terrible to think about.
She blinked rapidly and focused on his questions about her father. "Hm..." she murmured, tapping a finger against her lips. "Mum said Dad's coat was orangeish-yellow. And he had dark stripes like me!" She grinned and held out her bare arm to show off her dark brown stripes and yellowish undercoat. "Mum said I got most of my fur color from him."
Her smile faded as she tried to figure out age. "Um... Mum said he was 18 or 19 when they met, and that was... 14 years ago? So... Early thirties, I think. Do you know anyone like that?" She grinned at him, all hopeful innocence.

The cat grinned suddenly. "Woooooooow~ I was like 19 when I met Ariel the Mermaid, too! And I'm 33! Similarities!" The idea that there could be a link didn't come to mind. He didn't quite see the similarity. "So we can go hunting? Hunting? Yes? No? We can find him??? I'm hungry."
He bounced almost a little bit, head cocked to the side. Then he rubbed his neck again. "And she was evil. I'm going to kill her when I find her for what she did."

Kioa pursed her lips for a moment. "Huh. That's really funny, you met your Ariel 14 years ago, and my mum, Ariel, met my dad, Chris, 14 years ago. And you're named Chris..." She didn't mention that she had just realized why he looked so familiar. She could see little traces in his face that reminded her of her reflection.
"My mum's coat was mostly dark brown, and she had white socks, and a white tail tip. Oh, and she had a little reddish orange patch, behind one ear." She pointed on her own head. "What did your Ariel look like?"
She stood, stretching. "I'm hungry too. But I'm not that great at catching rats." She wrinkled her nose. Mum had always been the one to catch food.

"Like that too! And she liked blue! And had good hair." He bounded to his feet. "I can catch. Then I didn't catch too good because I'm hungry. I don't hunt so good when hungry." Another glimmer. A glimpse of the old Chris. A bit more of his accent.

"Huh. Mum's favorite color was blue, too. That's pretty weird..." She trailed off, and smiled at Chris. "Mum always caught dinner for us. She always said I was too little to hunt with her." She made a face, and turned to wander down the street, walking softly so not to scare off any rats.
"Then she died before she could teach me to hunt. I've been living off scraps, mostly. Rats are hard to catch." Her eyes darted to a soft noise in front of her, and she crouched to the ground, not moving her eyes from the twitching rodent. "Shhhh...."

There was a flash of white before the rodent was crushed beneath his boot. Fangor bent down as he picked it up, surveying the pair before he tossed the rat to Kioa. For once, he wasn't in a particularly good mood for killing or maiming. He studied her quietly. "Is he pestering you?" A question not for her sake, but for his. For how impossible or tolerable Chris would be.

Kioa squeaked and fell back, scrambling away from this new cat. Not just because she had never seen him before, though that was part of the reason she was scared. No, this tom just looked scary, with all his scars and his pink eyes.
She gulped, her eyes darting between the crushed rat and the white tom. After a few moments of stunned and scared silence, she realized the tom had asked her a question. She cast a quick glance at Chris and shook her head.
"N-no. We were just talking. He's nice." Kioa chanced a small smile, before her face fell and she went back to focusing on the rat at her feet.

Fangor nodded his head. Again, not caring about Kioa but Chris' state. "You didn't say where you were going," he reprimanded.

After glancing between Chris and the white tom, she decided he wasn't speaking to her anymore. That was fine. After a moment, she crawled forward to grab the rat, sitting back to patiently pick the fur off.
Mum always carefully skinned the rats they had to eat. Once the rat was suitable skinned, she nibbled a few bites off the rat before glancing back at Chris. He seemed so hungry.... Smiling, she held out the rat to him. She had found a nice storekeeper a couple days ago, who gave her some sardines. She wasn't so hungry she couldn't share.
