Skimbleshanks walked briskly back into the yard. He could not be happier to be back. It had been two whole weeks since he left, and he was eager to see everybody again. As usual, his children were nowhere to be seen.
He resisted the urge to say 'I'm home, Darling' since there wasn't one. Sure, there was the mother of his children, but they'd never made it work. He wanted someone, but his constant being away for extended periods made it difficult. He hadn't even been present when either of his sons were born.

Kamaria was lazying about on the bonnet of the old car, all tuckered out after all the shenanigans with Rumpleteazer and Exotica. She was still grinning - so far it had been a pretty good day.
She looked up when she heard Skimbleshanks appearing. She didn't know the older tom all that well, but she quite liked him. She always thought of him as the tribe's favourite uncle or something to that effect.
"Welcome back, Skimbleshanks! Been oot and aboot again?" she called to him with a smile and wave.

Skimble raised an eyebrow at her. "That's an atrocious accent, young lady," he said, although it was clear he took it in good humour.
"You look like you've been enjoying yourself more that you should."

"Heh, sorry. Accents were never my strength," Kamaria said with a sheepish grin, and stretched.
"Oh, I probably have. Reverted into kitten mode with Exotica and Rumpleteazer. It's fun to be stupidly immature once in a while."

"You'll get led astray by those two," Skimble said happily. "You wouldn't want to get into all the trouble that Rumpleteazer does. Mungojerrie too."

"Who says I haven't been led astray already?" Kamaria said and grinned impishly.
"Ah, who am I kidding?" she said more seriously, scratching behind one ear. "As much as I enjoy silly shenanigans, I'm too much of a thinker. Exotica is older than me, but sometimes you'd think it was the other way around," she said with a smile.
Oh yes. Kamaria was perfectly capable of being 6 years old sometimes, but she could also be mature beyond her years. She was a bit of an old soul, really. While her friends would often go head-first into things, Kamaria usually held a little back, thinking of the consequences. Thinking ahead.

"I wish my sons would think a bit more," Skimble lamented. "Even Victor is far too inclined to rush headlong, and not take the time to think things through."

Kamaria nodded.
"Toms will be toms, I suppose."

"And chase far too many tails," Skimble said.
He sighed. "Still, I suppose I didn't know better back then. That is how Victor is here in the first place."

"Don't they all?" Kamaria said with a small smile. She'd never really experienced that chase. Nobody ever chased her tail, and she was too shy to be the one to chase. That was probably why she was 24 and never even been kissed. She was too damn shy.
"And, really? I never pegged you as the carefree rebel," she grinned. She was aware of Victor and Skimble being related, but since she didn't know either of them particularly well, she didn't know any of the details.

"We were all young once," Skimble said. "Even if we don't look it."
That was in defiance of the fact that Skimbleshanks wasn't that old, nor did he look it. Only his manner was old.

"Hey, I never said you look old! You don't, at all," Kamaria said with a smile, crossing her arms in front of her chest. She had never looked at Skimble as anything other than the tribe's uncle, but he was actually really handsome.

"I'm almost forty," Skimble pointed out. "I'm hardly the spry young thing I was when I arrived in London."

Kamaria blinked. Of course, it made sense, since he has a son almost as old as Kamaria, but still. Almost forty. Wow.
"Well, for what it's worth, I don't think you look a day over thirty," she said with a smile.

"Nice girls shouldn't lie," Skimble said, smiling. "Since my eldest is twenty, I should hope I'm older than that."

Kamaria grinned.
"I'm not, honest!" she said earnestly, placing a hand lightly over her heart as if to prove her point.
"Indeed. Had that been the case, you must've hit puberty very early," she teased, blue eyes twinkling.

Skimbleshanks didn't reply immediately to that one. It brought an embarrassing thought. He was always self conscious about his...tomhood. It was too big for his liking, and too big to go unnoticed through most pants.
Skimble shuffled his feet, adjusting his belt.
"Rather impossibly early," he eventually said.

Kamaria fidgeted for a second. Skimbleshanks seemed momentarily uncomfortable - was it something she said?
She smiled when he finally responded.
"Probably. Still though. You don't look your age."
Then, not wanting to accidentally make him uncomfortable again, she changed the subject.
"So, do you bring back any good stories from your travels?"

"None particularly fascinating," Skimble conceded. "It's getting colder up north. So the cold will soon creep down, though."

Kamaria nodded.
"I never much liked the cold. Unless I have somewhere warm to curl up, then I suppose it can be quite cozy. I enjoy watching the snow fall outside the window when I'm at my human home," she said, rubbing her arms as a sudden chill went through her.

"I assure you the train is quite a nice warm way to watch the snow," Skimble said. "And the scenery doesn't get boring."

"I've never been on a train. I bet it's wonderful, though. I could probably spend all day watching the scenery go by," Kamaria said with a dreamy look on her face.

"I will admit to a certain love of staring out the window," Skimble said. "Although I won't say I am always free to do so. Duties must come first."

Kamaria nodded. "Of course. The Railway Cat can't just sit and while away the hours by the window, I suppose," she said with a smile.

Skimble nodded. "Duty is always calling, even if it can get lonely, being the only cat on the train."
He looked at his watch again. "And my children are now ten minutes late for welcoming me home," he added. "Still, I wouldn't expect them to remember a time I told them two weeks ago."

Kamaria nodded.
"I'm glad my human lets me out pretty much every day. Human company is nice and all, and my human is a very good human, but still, nothing beats company of the feline persuasion," she said and paused.
"Several weeks on the train must get lonesome."
She smiled when he looked at his watch. Ever so punctual, as always.
"Well, I'll happily keep you company until they show up. ..Unless you want to go looking for them?"

Skimble waved a hand flippantly. "Oh, they'll turn up eventually. It's not like they avoid me, they just forget about me."

Kamaria snorted. "Forget about you? Just like that?"

"Well I'm far from exciting," Skimble pointed out. "I quite understand that young lives are far more interesting than their father's presence."

Kamaria smiled. "oh, I bet you aren't half as boring as you think you are. You have sons, so you must have been up to some mischief," she said. "where is their mother, anyway? I don't remember seeing you with any particular queen, so I always assumed you were single," she admitted, a little embarrassed by her own straightforwardness.
